Who files what

One filing a year, three registries

Where your company was incorporated decides where its yearly filing goes and when it's due. It confirms the details the registry holds, such as addresses and directors.

British Columbia

BC annual report

Filed with BC Registries.

  • Due within two months after the anniversary of incorporation
  • Registry fee of $43.39
  • Financial statements and minutes aren't filed; they stay with your records
  • Two years without a report and the company may be dissolved
Alberta

Alberta annual return

Filed through an authorized registry service provider.

  • Due by the last day of the month after your anniversary month
  • A reminder goes to the registered office a month before the anniversary
  • Lists the top five shareholders and their voting shares
  • Alberta annual-return costs are estimated at about $80 based on our recent registry work. Registry-agent service charges and other costs may be additional; we confirm an itemized total before filing.
  • If it isn't filed, the corporation may be dissolved
Federal

Corporations Canada annual return

For companies incorporated federally.

  • Due within 60 days following the anniversary date
  • Fee of $12, filed online
  • Filed with information on individuals with significant control
  • Filing avoids the potential dissolution of the corporation
How it works

Your filing date, tracked for you

An annual report is short, but it has to match what's true about your company: its offices and its directors. In Alberta, it also lists the main shareholders. We check those details against your minute book before anything is filed.

An annual report isn't your tax return. Corporations Canada says the same: they're two separate filings, and your company needs both. We look after the tax side through our tax service.

Finvo is not a law firm. If something needs legal advice, we say so and your lawyer takes it from there.

  1. Date on our calendar

We note your anniversary date and where the company files, so the deadline doesn't depend on a reminder letter.

  2. Details checked

Offices, directors and, for Alberta, shareholders are checked against your minute book and the registry profile.

  3. You confirm

If anything has changed, we tell you first. Some changes need their own filing before the annual report.

  4. Handled for you

Once you've confirmed the details, we handle the filing for you.

  5. Kept on record

The filed report goes into your minute book, and next year's date is already tracked.

Behind on filings?

If a year was missed

It happens, especially to quiet holding companies. The fix depends on how far behind the company is.

One report overdue

We prepare the overdue report first, then the current one, so the registry shows the company as up to date.

A dissolution notice arrived

In BC, a company that hasn't filed its annual report for two years in a row may be dissolved. If you get a notice, the overdue reports should be filed as it instructs. BC also lets a company ask to delay dissolution.

Already dissolved

A dissolved company can often be restored. In BC, the most common route is a full restoration by the registrar. Restoration is a legal process: your lawyer, or a lawyer we can recommend, handles it (a paralegal can support the administrative side under the lawyer), and we prepare the overdue filings and figures it needs.

Before bigger changes

BC requires a company to be up to date with its annual reports before it changes its name or amalgamates, so we catch up the annual reports first.

Questions

Annual returns, answered

When is a BC company's annual report due?

A BC company files an annual report each year within two months after the anniversary of its incorporation. The registry fee is $43.39 (checked 27 Oct 2026). Financial statements and minutes aren't filed with it; they're kept with the company's records.

Does an Alberta corporation file an annual return?

Yes. An Alberta corporation files an annual return each year through an authorized registry service provider. It's due by the last day of the month after the month the company was incorporated in, and Alberta sends a reminder to the registered office a month before the anniversary of incorporation. The return lists the top five shareholders. Registry fees are about $80 (an estimate from our recent registry work, not a statutory fee); registry agent service charges and other fees can apply, and we confirm the total before filing.

When is a federal corporation's annual return due?

A corporation incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act files its annual return with Corporations Canada within 60 days following its anniversary date. Filing online costs $12 (checked 27 Oct 2026), and information on individuals with significant control is filed at the same time.

What happens if we miss an annual report?

In BC, a company that doesn't file its annual report for two years in a row may be dissolved by the registrar. Alberta and Corporations Canada also warn that not filing can lead to dissolution. If you're behind, we prepare the overdue filings first. If a restoration is needed, your lawyer handles it and we support them with the filings and figures.

Is the annual report the same as the corporate tax return?

No. The annual report or return goes to the corporate registry and confirms the company's details. The T2 corporate tax return goes to the CRA and reports the company's income. Your company needs both every year, and we can look after both.

Our BC company also works in Alberta. Do we file in both?

Alberta says a corporation whose home province is British Columbia, Manitoba or Saskatchewan doesn't file an annual return in Alberta; it files in its home province. Companies from other provinces or countries registered in Alberta do file there. We check which filings apply to your company.

Is Finvo a law firm? Can you give legal advice?

No. Finvo is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. We prepare routine corporate records and filings with registry software, for matters that don't need legal advice. For anything legal, your lawyer (or a lawyer we can recommend) does that work, and we support them. Consultants and paralegals can support administrative work under a lawyer, or handle filings that need no legal advice.
