Tax guides for newcomers to Canada in BC and Alberta
These guides help people who recently moved to British Columbia or Alberta with their first Canadian tax returns: when you become a resident, what income to report, which credits to claim, RRSP or TFSA, and the benefits a return unlocks. Filing every year, even with little or no income, is usually how the CRA and benefit programs work out your benefit and credit payments.

Newcomer tax, answered
Do I have to file a tax return in my first year in Canada?
If you owe tax, yes, and even if you don't, the CRA uses your return to work out benefit and credit payments. For most newcomers, residency starts the day you start living in Canada. Our newcomer tax guide explains the first return.
When is my first return due?
For the 2026 tax year, most people file and pay by 30 April 2027. If you or your spouse or common-law partner are self-employed, the return is due by 15 June 2027, but any balance owing is still due by 30 April 2027.
Which benefits can newcomers get?
Depending on your situation, the Canada child benefit, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST/HST credit) and provincial programs. You can apply for some before your first return. Finvo is not part of the government; the program decides eligibility and payments.
Do I report income from before I arrived?
For benefits, the CRA asks newcomers for their income from outside Canada for the part of the year before they became resident. On your tax return, you report your income from anywhere in the world from the day you became resident. Our newcomer guide covers both.
Can I open an RRSP or TFSA as a newcomer?
TFSA room generally starts the year you become a resident and are 18 or older. RRSP room comes from earned income reported on Canadian returns, so it usually starts after your first return. Our RRSP or TFSA guide compares them.
Can Finvo help with my first return?
Yes. We prepare first returns for newcomers in BC and Alberta, by video or phone, or in person at our Surrey, Edmonton and Courtenay offices. We go through your arrival date, income and benefits, and you approve the return before it's filed.
