Picks the B.C. family benefit or the Alberta Child and Family Benefit. The CCB is the same everywhere. Other provinces aren’t covered here.
What: your net income plus your spouse’s or common-law partner’s, for 2025. Where: line 23600 of each 2025 return, or each Notice of Assessment. Add the two. Rare adjustments: take off any universal child care benefit (UCCB) or RDSP income received, and add back any repaid. Example: 42,000 + 28,000 = 70,000. Common mistake: using only your own income, or your gross pay instead of net income.

What this means

  • Your 2025 family income is over $38,237, so part of the CCB comes off: 13.5% of the extra income for 2 children.
  • BC keeps a minimum B.C. family benefit for families up to $96,562, so you get $1,525.
  • These benefits are tax-free: they don’t go on your tax return as income.

What to do next

  1. File both 2025 returns, and every year after, even with no income. Payments stop without them.
  2. Register each child at birth registration, in your CRA account, or with Form RC66.
  3. Payment dates: November 20 and December 11, 2026, then generally the 20th of each month.
  4. Tell the CRA about changes in marital status or custody, by the end of the month after the change.

Finvo is not part of the government. The CRA, B.C. and Alberta decide who qualifies and how much is paid. Use CRA’s own calculator to check.

Method

How it's calculated

The calculator follows the steps on CRA’s “How much you can get” page and the B.C. and Alberta rules. Each benefit is worked out for the year, then divided by 12.

  1. Adjusted family net income (AFNI). Line 23600 of your 2025 return plus your spouse’s or partner’s, minus any UCCB or RDSP income received, plus any repaid.
  2. CCB maximum. $8,157 for each child under 6 plus $6,883 for each child aged 6 to 17.
  3. CCB reduction. Nothing comes off up to $38,237. Between $38,237 and $82,847, a percentage of the income over $38,237 comes off: 7%, 13.5%, 19% or 23% for 1, 2, 3, or 4 or more children. Above $82,847, a fixed amount ($3,123, $6,022, $8,476 or $10,260) plus 3.2%, 5.7%, 8% or 9.5% of the income over $82,847 comes off. The CCB is the maximum minus the reduction, never below zero.
  4. Child Disability Benefit. $3,480 per child approved for the disability tax credit, minus 3.2% (one child) or 5.7% (two or more) of income over $82,847.
  5. B.C. family benefit. $1,750, $1,100 and $900 per child (plus up to $500 for a single parent), minus 4% of income over $30,176. Up to $96,562 you keep at least $775, $750 and $725 per child; above it, those minimums shrink by 4% of income over $96,562.
  6. Alberta Child and Family Benefit. Base: up to $1,529 to $3,821, minus 8.05% to 20.11% of income over $28,116. Working: 15% of family working income over $2,760, up to $782 to $2,061, minus 3.40% to 8.95% of income over $47,115.
  7. Shared custody. If you tick it, each benefit is halved, because each parent gets 50% of the full-custody amount.
  8. Monthly amounts. The yearly amount divided by 12. The Alberta benefit is paid in four instalments, so it’s also shown per quarter.

Worked examples

Two worked examples for July 2026 to June 2027

Example 1: a BC family with two children under 6 and $70,000

A couple in Surrey with two children under 6. Their 2025 net incomes (line 23600) were $42,000 and $28,000, so their adjusted family net income is $70,000.

CCB: the maximum is 2 × $8,157 = $16,314. Their income is $31,763 over $38,237, and with 2 children 13.5% of that comes off: $4,288. The CCB is $12,026 a year, about $1,002 a month.

B.C. family benefit: the maximum is $1,750 + $1,100 = $2,850. 4% of the $39,824 over $30,176 is $1,593, which would leave $1,257, but BC keeps a minimum of $775 + $750 = $1,525 a year, about $127 a month, until $96,562.

Example 1: BC, two children under 6, $70,000 adjusted family net income
LinePer monthPer year
CCB maximum$1,360$16,314
CCB reduction (13.5% × $31,763)−$357−$4,288
Canada Child Benefit$1,002$12,026
B.C. family benefit (minimum)$127$1,525
Total$1,129$13,551

Both arrive together each month. If one of the children turns 6 during the year, the CCB for that child drops to the $6,883 rate from the month after the birthday.

Example 2: an Alberta single parent with two children and $36,000 from work

A single parent in Edmonton with one child under 6 and one aged 8. Their 2025 net income was $36,000, all from a job, so family working income is also $36,000.

CCB: $36,000 is under $38,237, so nothing comes off: $8,157 + $6,883 = $15,040 a year, about $1,253 a month.

Alberta base component: $2,293 for two children, minus 12.07% of the $7,884 over $28,116 ($952) = $1,341. Working component: 15% of the $33,240 over $2,760 is $4,986, more than the $1,494 maximum for two children, and income is under $47,115, so it’s $1,494. The Alberta benefit is $2,835 a year, paid as about $709 in each of August, November, February and May.

Example 2: Alberta, two children, $36,000 income from work
LinePer monthPer year
Canada Child Benefit (no reduction)$1,253$15,040
Alberta base component$112$1,341
Alberta working component$125$1,494
Total$1,490$17,875

The CCB arrives monthly; the Alberta benefit arrives separately four times a year. A higher 2025 income would cut the base component first, from $28,116, and the working component only above $47,115.

Payment dates

When the payments arrive

The CCB, the Child Disability Benefit and the B.C. family benefit come as one monthly deposit, generally on the 20th, or the last business day before it. The Alberta Child and Family Benefit is paid separately, four times a year. If a payment hasn’t arrived, the CRA asks you to wait 5 working days before calling.

To keep the payments coming

  • File every year, both of you. You and your spouse or partner each file a return, even with no income. July’s new amount comes from last year’s returns.
  • Tell the CRA about a change in marital status by the end of the month after it happens, in your CRA account, by phone or with Form RC65. For a separation, wait until you have been apart for more than 90 days.
  • Tell the CRA when custody changes: a child starts or stops living with you, or a shared custody arrangement begins, ends or changes.
  • Moving between BC and Alberta, or out of the province? Update your address with the CRA, so the right provincial benefit is paid.

New to Canada? Apply with Form RC66 and Schedule RC66SCH; our newcomer tax guide explains your first return. For every other benefit, see government benefits in BC and Alberta.

Questions

Canada Child Benefit, answered

How much Canada Child Benefit will I get from July 2026 to June 2027?

Up to $8,157 a year ($679.75 a month) for each child under 6 and $6,883 a year ($573.58 a month) for each child aged 6 to 17. You get the full amount if your 2025 adjusted family net income was under $38,237. Above that, a percentage of the extra income comes off, depending on how many children you have.

What income is the CCB based on?

Payments from July 2026 to June 2027 are based on your adjusted family net income for 2025: your net income from line 23600 of your 2025 return plus your spouse's or common-law partner's, minus any universal child care benefit or RDSP income received, plus any amounts of those repaid. A change in your income in 2026 shows up in July 2027.

When are Canada Child Benefit payments made?

Monthly, generally on the 20th, or the last business day before it. The remaining 2026 dates are November 20 and December 11, 2026. The B.C. family benefit and the Child Disability Benefit come in the same payment. The Alberta Child and Family Benefit is paid separately four times a year, in August, November, February and May.

How does shared custody change the CCB?

If a child lives with you between 40% and 60% of the time, you and the other parent each get half of what you would get with full custody, each worked out on your own adjusted family net income. The CRA doesn't split it any other way. The B.C. and Alberta benefits are halved the same way.

Do both parents need to file a tax return to get the CCB?

Yes. You and your spouse or common-law partner each need to file a return every year, even with no income or income that isn't taxable. The CRA uses both returns to work out your family net income. If a return is missing, payments can be delayed or stop, and the B.C. and Alberta benefits stop with them.

How do I apply for the Canada Child Benefit?

For a newborn, the easiest way is to give consent when you register the birth with your province. You can also apply in your CRA account or by mailing Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application. Apply as soon as a child is born, starts living with you, or a custody arrangement begins or changes. The B.C. and Alberta benefits need no separate application.

I'm new to Canada. Can I get the CCB?

You may, if you live in Canada with your child and you or your spouse or partner is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months with a valid permit in the 19th month. Newcomers apply by mailing Form RC66 with Schedule RC66SCH, Status in Canada and Statement of Income.

What is the Child Disability Benefit?

An extra tax-free amount added to the CCB for a child approved for the disability tax credit. From July 2026 to June 2027 it is up to $3,480 a year ($290 a month) per child. It is reduced once adjusted family net income is over $82,847: by 3.2% of the extra income for one eligible child, or 5.7% for two or more.

How much is the B.C. family benefit for 2026–27?

Up to $1,750 a year for the first child, $1,100 for the second and $900 for each other child, in full when 2025 family income is under $30,176. Above that, 4% of the extra income comes off, but you keep at least $775, $750 and $725 per child until $96,562. Low-income single parents can get up to $500 more.

How does the Alberta Child and Family Benefit work?

It has two parts, paid in August, November, February and May. The base component is up to $1,529 for one child and $3,821 for four or more, reduced once family net income passes $28,116. The working component starts when family working income passes $2,760, grows by 15% of each extra dollar up to $782 to $2,061, and is reduced above $47,115.
