Three common cases, worked out the way the calculator does it.

BC: adding tax to a $1,250 job

Taxable goods sold in British Columbia, so GST and PST both apply, each on the price before tax.

Price before tax$1,250.00
GST 5%$62.50
PST 7%$87.50
Total$1,400.00

Alberta: taking GST out of $525

A receipt for $525.00 including GST. Divide by 1.05 to find the price before tax.

Total paid$525.00
÷ 1.05 = price before tax$500.00
GST inside the total$25.00

Ontario: taking HST out of $339

A total of $339.00 including 13% HST. Divide by 1.13, then subtract.

Total paid$339.00
÷ 1.13 = price before tax$300.00
HST inside the total$39.00
Registration, 2026

Do I need to register?

For GST/HST, it comes down to $30,000 of taxable sales. For BC PST, it depends on what you sell, not how much.

GST/HST small-supplier check

Taxable sales in the busiest of the last four calendar quarters (Jan–Mar, Apr–Jun, Jul–Sep or Oct–Dec), including the current one.

Taxable sales before expenses, including zero-rated sales and sales outside Canada, plus those of any associated businesses. Leave out financial services, sales of capital property and goodwill.

Most businesses must register once taxable sales go over $30,000 in one calendar quarter, or over $30,000 across the last four calendar quarters.

  • Over $30,000 in one quarter: you stop being a small supplier on the sale that takes you over. Charge GST/HST on that sale and register within 29 days.
  • Over $30,000 across four quarters (but not in one): you stop being a small supplier at the end of the month after that quarter. Start charging on your next sale and register within 29 days of it.
  • $30,000 or less: you are a small supplier. Registering is optional.

Registering below $30,000

Small suppliers can register voluntarily. You then charge GST/HST on your sales and can claim input tax credits for the GST/HST you pay on business costs. It can make sense if your customers are mostly registered businesses, or if you have big start-up costs.

Some businesses must register whatever their sales, including self-employed taxi and rideshare drivers. Non-residents and digital businesses have their own rules.

BC PST basics

If your business is in BC, you generally must register to collect PST if you, in the ordinary course of business:

  • sell or lease taxable goods, such as general merchandise, furniture, building materials or liquor
  • provide software, or related services to goods (repairs, installation, maintenance)
  • provide legal or telecommunication services, or sell accommodation

There is no general dollar threshold. The exception is the small seller: $10,000 or less in eligible retail sales in the last 12 months (and expected in the next 12), with no established business premises. BC registration can take up to 21 business days to process.

Professional services: BC announced PST on accounting, architectural, engineering, geoscience, non-residential real estate and security services from October 1, 2026. As of October 2026, the province says this expansion is paused. See the BC PST page.

        How this is calculated

        Rates and method

        1. Adding tax: each tax is worked out on the price before tax and rounded to the cent. PST, RST and QST are not charged on the GST.
        2. Removing tax: the total is divided by 1 plus the combined rate to find the price before tax. GST is worked out on that price; the rest of the tax is the provincial part, so the parts always add up to your total.
        3. Rates: the general 2026 rates below. Exempt and zero-rated items (for example basic groceries and many health services), special rates and rebates are not included.

        Total = price × (1 + combined rate)
        Price = total ÷ (1 + combined rate)

        Questions

        GST, HST and PST, answered

How do I calculate GST and PST in BC?

Work out each tax on the price before tax: GST is 5% and PST is 7%, so together they add 12%. On a $100 sale, GST is $5.00, PST is $7.00 and the total is $112.00. PST is not charged on the GST. Some goods and services are exempt from PST, or from both taxes.

How do I take the tax out of a total that already includes it?

Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. In BC, divide by 1.12: a $112.00 total is $100.00 before tax. In Ontario, divide by 1.13. In Alberta, divide by 1.05. Then subtract to find the tax. Use the Remove tax mode above to do this for any province.

        Is there PST in Alberta?

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so most sales carry only the 5% GST. The Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut also charge GST only.

When do I have to register for GST/HST?

Most businesses must register once their taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or over $30,000 in total across the last four calendar quarters or fewer. Below that you are a small supplier and registration is optional. Taxi and rideshare drivers must register from their first fare.

Do I need to register for PST in BC?

If your business is in BC and sells or leases taxable goods, provides software, or provides taxable services such as repairs to goods, legal services or telecommunication services, you generally must register. There is no general dollar threshold, but small sellers with $10,000 or less in eligible retail sales over 12 months, and no established business premises, may not have to. BC announced PST on accounting and some other professional services from October 1, 2026, and has since said that expansion is paused.

Which rate do I charge a customer in another province?

GST/HST generally follows the place of supply. For goods, that is usually where they are delivered, so a BC business shipping to Ontario usually charges 13% HST. Services follow their own place-of-supply rules. Provincial sales taxes follow each province's own rules, and some provinces require sellers from outside the province to register. Ask us if you sell across provinces.
